As a physical theatre company we believe in preparing our actors to be able to sustain their breath, bodies, and minds on stage. We are mindful that no two bodies are the same, that each stores unique life and training experiences, and that everyone has different needs. We believe in appropriately enhancing body mechanics, range of motion, and skill building for each person.
We operate all of our classes through the lens of consent. Comfort zones, range of motion, general fatigue, classroom and home life, energy levels, or unexpected events: all of these affect a person's consent. We ensure people feel empowered to ask for what they need from us and the people they share space with in a clear and respectful way. Consent can change from day to day or minute to minute; no person will ever be pushed to do something they do not feel safe or empowered doing. Practicing how to advocate for your needs is essential in building trust and strong partnerships in any environment.
Beyond stage combat skills, Affair of Honor students learn how to collaborate while building respect, trust, communication, and connection with one another. Participants achieve this through games exploring cooperation between partners and the illusion of energy.
With this introduction to stage combat, we aim to share our appreciation of stage combat on and off stage. Martial artists, for example, may find that stage combat provides access to the style and choreography of their martial form without the need of a sparring partner. Athlete or not, anybody can explore the potential of what their bodies can do, and stage combat offers a perspective that’s very unique.
Keep that mindset! We believe in approaching all learning with the heart of the beginner. Use fun and dynamic movement that challenges you. Try, and try again. There’s always something to learn no matter what, and each person is free to work towards goals at their own pace.
